COMMON OBJECTIONS TO THE
ESSENTIALITY OF BAPTISM
ANSWERED
Baptism is perhaps the most debated matter pertaining to salvation. It is regrettable that there are so many misunderstandings about baptism. The scriptures are clear on this subject, so why are there objections to baptism? The scriptures teach that salvation is by the grace of God through faith and baptism is the occasion when God saves us.
BASIC RULE OF INTERPRETATION: To know what the Bible says about a particular subject, you must everything that the Bible says about it. In other words, no passage can teach less than it teaches, but other passages may contain additional revelation. We believe in taking the entirety of scripture, not just selected passages, in understanding God's will. Consider this example: Matthew 1:16 teaches that Jesus is the Christ. Is he only the Christ? Galatians 1:3 identifies Jesus as Lord. Is Lord and not the Christ? Is he only one or the other? Of course not! He is BOTH! We must apply this same logic to Bible verses addressing salvation. We do not have to choose between faith and grace or repentance and baptism. We must recognize the harmony of the teachings of the Lord and believe all that he has said regarding our salvation.
